District-2 ditches teacher performance pay

Saying its performance pay plan enacted under former Superintendent Mike Miles isn't working as planned, Harrison School District 2 suspended the program in mid-February.

Miles is long gone, and D-2 is relying on two top officials to serve as temporary operations managers following the unexpected resignation last May of Superintendent Andre Spencer, who left with $250,000 in severance pay.

Performance pay was instituted to help D-2 recruit and retain good teachers and boost student achievement.

"Our District struggles to attract and retain quality teachers within our current E&R [effectiveness and results] Pay for Performance System," the district said in a news release. "A national teacher shortage has left districts competing for fewer teachers and will only complicate the situation further."

D-2 will take 10 months to devise a new compensation model and has set up a working committee with representation from across the district. A new program is to be implemented for the 2020-21 year.
