When John Adams' composition "American Standard" was released in 1975 on Obscure Records, the label's name may have seemed prophetic. The New Englander's early works were heavily influenced by minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass, back at a time when the latter was still working as a New York City cab driver. But four decades later, Adams and Glass are the go-to composers when symphony orchestras are looking to add more contemporary flair to masterworks-heavy repertoires. This weekend, conductor Josep Caballé-Domenech and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic tackle Dr. Atomic, the 2005 opera by Adams and librettist Peter Sellars that explores the Faustian elements in the life of Manhattan Project leader Robert Oppenheimer. Tonight's 7:30 concert will be reprised Sunday at 2:30, with pre-concert lectures beginning one hour before each performance. Pikes Peak Center, 190 South Cascade Avenue, $21-$63, — Bill Forman
