Seattle punk-soul outfit Down North don’t want to be typecast as purveyors of “black rock,” preferring instead to think of themselves as a reincarnation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers covering classic Michael Jackson with an upstart James Brown at the mic. The comparisons do ring true: Soulful singer Anthony “RenaGade” Briscoe has no qualms about dropping the occasional King of Pop vocal tic into the mix, while his three bandmates’ stripped-down arrangements are much more primal than those of slicker soul-pop acts like Fitz & The Tantrums. Briscoe is also one of the few, if any, contemporary soul singers to boast a background in ballet training, although his onstage showmanship thankfully owes more to James and Jacko than it does Baryshnikov and Nureyev. After nearly a decade touring with the likes of rap-rock band Gym Class Heroes and bona fide soul legend Lee Fields, Down North are only just now getting around to releasing their first EP, No Retreat Vol. 1. Their current tour includes a number of outdoor festivals, but this opportunity to catch them up-close and sweaty in a 300-capacity club sounds like the better way to go.
