The City for Champions stadium/arena project, one of four projects under that banner (including a sports medicine center at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, an Air Force Academy visitors center and the downtown Olympic Museum now under construction) has taken a long time to gain steam.

The four C4C projects all were allotted sales tax money totaling $120.5 million from the state Economic Development Commission via the Regional Tourism Act, but it looked as though the city might have to forgo the $27 million allotted to the stadium/arena, since "substantial progress" must be made on the project by mid-December to keep the funds.

But on July 25, after the Indy's deadline, the mayor was expected to announce that details of the project have finally jelled. The main talking points: Along with state money, the project will be funded by Colorado College, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Weidner Apartment Homes. According to their website, Weidner is a major apartment management company based in Kirkland, Washington, that "owns more than 200 buildings comprised of just over 36,000 units throughout the United States and Canada."

The split project will be built on two downtown sites: The stadium will be located in the CityGate Urban Renewal Area in southwest downtown. The arena will be located on the block bordered by Nevada Avenue, Cache La Poudre Street, Tejon Street and Dale Street. You'll recall that CC already announced plans to build a new ice arena on the same block, so it's a safe bet that the Tigers will be using the new arena.
