Though the Colorado Springs Utilities Board, composed of City Council members, previously decided to decommission the downtown Drake Power Plant by 2035, officials appear to be speeding up that timetable. In the next two weeks, the city will host two meetings to solicit public comment: a telephone town hall meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m., at City Hall, 107 N. Nevada Ave.

To hasten the Drake shutdown, the Utilities Board must replace the energy it produces. A new plant, likely using natural gas rather than Drake's coal, could be built on the Drake site or at the Birdsall Power Plant site on North Nevada. The city could also buy power from another provider. For more, csu.org.
