Re: “The outsiders

I too live here in the Springs after 20 years in the AF. I spent 3 different tours in Montgomery AL and was introduced to Mose T. at his house by an artist friend. I visited every month or so when I lived there and sometimes bought paintings (Scooter Women, Self Potrait, Freedom Bus, etc.). He painted a wardrobe door for me one time when I told him I was getting married and refinishing a wardrobe....he called it Wedding Girl. I kept the door when the wardrobe was sold along the way. Ocassionally, he would ask for a ride to the pharmacy or local store as he was unable to drive and get around on his own very well. He was a kind, friendly gentleman whose door was always open in an area of town that was sometimes a little rough. There were days he would have 30 or 40 paintings around the room and then others when there wouldn't be a single one (a dealer from Birmingham or Atlanta would have come in and bought everything). Mose T. would put the $$ under the mattress of the bed he painted from in the living room and I often worried that someone would come in and rob him....little did I know he was being robbed by some of the buyers along the way. I have fond memories of him and I always brought out of town visitors to meet him who quite often left with a painting (mostly a small Watermellon painting....his mainstay). I was sad to here he had passed a few years back, but I am happy his work is living on in collections like Ms. Allens. I will have to round up the family to go see the collection and then once again try to convince my wife to let me unpack ours and display them in the house here....Mose T. is not for everyone, but this is true of all art.
