Re: “Letters

Today, Sunday, 11/29/09 I was walking on the sidewalk on the east side of Tejon. This was between Bijou and Kiowa. A man in a small red service truck came driving towards me on the sidewalk. I got out of the way. Then, I heard and saw that man yell at a middle school kid for riding his bike on the sidewalk. This was a bout 12:30 in the afternoon. The three of us were the only people in sight.
When the youngster got to me he looked terrified as he now walked hurriedly. I'm pretty sure he was afraid that I would yell at him also. I just said "you're okay".

I remember the old days when my parents told me and my brother not to ride on the street. It's too dangerous they stated. And this was in a town of 2700 people. Their advice failed to convince me or my brother. My brother was run over by a car when he was in the 8th grade (only bruises and scratches). I was run into by a truck on Bijou and Chestnut not too long ago. An irresposible guy ran the stop sign on Bijou and wasn't man enough to tell the truth. This was a retired Army Chaplan. Like my neighbor said I guess once you're a retired chaplan you don't have to tell the truth.

Anyway, I've never lived in a city where it was illegal to ride on the sidewalk. We should be encouraging people to ride bikes, but of course, here in the Springs, we seem to be doing just the opposite.
