  • Deramus DeWayne Lemuel died after being restrained in the El Paso County jail.

  1. The family of Deramus DeWayne Lemuel, who died Aug. 1, 2018, after being restrained in the El Paso County jail, has submitted a notice of claim, a step before filing a lawsuit, against the county, state corrections officials, UCHealth Memorial Hospital and others.
  2. The El Paso County GOP elected Tamra Farah as chair, Mary Bradfield as vice chair and Vickie Tonkins as secretary on Feb. 9.
  3. St. Francis Medical Center, 6001 E. Woodmen Road, announced its new emergency department will open Feb. 13, part of a $102 million expansion.
  4. Susan Wheelan, who served as interim director of El Paso County Public Health since September, is now officially in charge.
  5. The city will hold public meetings on a proposed ordinance expanding the use of accessory dwelling units, also known as in-law suites. Visit coloradosprings.gov/adu for more information.
  6. More than 2,500 Denver teachers began striking Feb. 11, after the school district and Denver Classroom Teachers Association failed to reach an agreement.

  8. Coyotes in southeast Bear Creek Regional Park attacked a dog Feb. 7, ripping open its stomach. The dog survived, but dog owners are reminded to leash their pets.
