El Paso County Public Health needs more money to keep up with a rapidly growing population, officials say.

The health department has requested a budget increase of $1 million over the next five years, starting with $250,000 in 2019. County commissioners included an increase of $150,000 in next year's proposed budget.

While the county's population has grown by nearly one-fourth since 2008, public health funding from the county has remained flat since 2012, according to data from El Paso County Financial Services. The health department receives about $3.3 million from the county, which accounts for about one-fifth of its budget — the rest comes mostly from grants, license and permitting fees, and state per-capita spending.
