Re: “In search of a movement

January 2010

I have just returned from a wonderful weekend of training. How can a Saturday and Sunday of early morning and jam-packed work days be so wonderful? Well, I spent my weekend with the likes of Polly Baca, Eugene Lucero, Frederico Pena, Steve Welchert, Patricisa Waak, Leondray Gholston, Michael Stratton, Mario Solis-Marich, John Salazar, Joelle Martinez, Hollie Valasquez, David Scott Martinez, Estevan Flores and Jeffrey Campos. These influential Latino leaders have come together to develop a training program to prepare the next generation of Latinas and Latinos interested in running for public office or serving as campaign managers. All the presenters this weekend shared with us a wealth of knowledge and years of experience in the Hispanic and political community. The program came together in response to the increasing political influence Latinos boast in American politics today. The training was sponsored by Xcel Energy, Univision and The Denver Hispanic Chamber of commerce. The forum hopes to increase participation through networks created throughout the United States.

I encourage all Hispanics interested in politics at every level to visit the Colorado Latino Forum website to learn more about the incredible opportunities these leaders are working together to provide to a new generation of diverse political leaders. If you have ever considered running for political office in your local community or beginning a political career in any capacity, I encourage you to keep an eye on this website for upcoming training sessions. All the presenters want to be available to provide guidance and support and have an “open door” policy. The warmth and energy during the weekend was phenomenal and the mentoring offered by these individuals is outstanding. Additionally, the room was filled with highly intelligent, hardworking and attractive Hispanics working to influence the political arena in very near future.

Consider sending a website link ( http://www.coloradolatinoforum.com/ ) to all the Hispanics in your email database. You never know who you might inspire (your children, nieces, uncles, neighbors) to take the first steps in their political career!

Encourage, influence, learn and grow. I am an American Latina and I vote!
