Re: “School is no Bible-free zone

The Gideons made an appearance at Eagleview Middle School also. They positioned themselves at every strategic exit that the students would use at the end of the school day, and of course, they were on the sidewalk to stay on the right side of the law. However, the school perimeter was encircled by strategically-placed older men in suits and hats, and frankly, at first glance, it looked like an ambush. My son said they were "creepy." That's very telling from the child's perspective, regardless of the "good" the Gideons felt they were handing out in the form of a New Testament. I asked one of the men what they were doing and he said defiantly "Exercising my rights." Right to what? Scare my child? Force him to walk by one of you as all exits are covered so he has no choice to be exposed to your opinion of what is "good"? What about the child's right to a non-creepy walk home? It could have been Bibles, or lollipops, or a coupon to Mr. Biggs... the item proffered doesn't matter. What does matter is the "creepy" or fear factor, and I have to agree with my son's assessment -- they were definitely a disturbing site encircling the school, a so-called "safe zone."
