Re: “Nation's first parrot cafe to open in the Springs

Hi Michael -- this is Erik, co-founder of The Perch. We found The Parrot Cafe (am I correct that you own that business?) in our extensive research on the subject. My understanding based on the two websites and other third party articles was that while The Parrot Cafe is a socially conscious business built for and by parrot enthusiasts, that it was NOT a place where the primary objective was to create an environment where people could meet and spend time with a variety of live parrots.

Our use of the term "parrot cafe" is not to imply "parrot themed cafe" or "cafe that benefits parrots" as we are certainly not the first or only. In our materials, we use the term strictly in the way that it has been used in the growing animal cafe trend (places where the primary value is in sharing a morning or an afternoon with a room of cats, dogs, hedgehogs, or parrots).

I could not find any information anywhere that mentioned that The Parrot Cafe in Seattle kept a flock of parrots living in the shop and the only picture of a live parrot there that I could find was a hyacinth macaw being held by someone on the outside of the front window. None of the interior shots included parrots or parrot gear.

By contrast, at our store, there are only a couple of places you could point a camera where you WOULDN'T see a live parrot :) We currently have 25 birds living in the main area of our shop with about that many more scheduled to be filtered in over the next couple of weeks. That's what our place is all about.

The Parrot Cafe, per the website, says "We are located in the Coffee Capital of the World, Seattle, Washington. We are proud to live in a city which not only is the center of coffee culture but also boasts the largest number of independent bookstores per capita, as well as the highest book readership per capita of any city in the United States! Here at the Parrot Cafe, we combine our love of exquisite organic coffee and tea with rare books and collectibles. To this endeavor we bring a background including two graduate degrees in history and archaeology and a career in academia and publishing, as well as retail experience in the Seattle coffee business. We first worked for Starbucks Coffee, and later operated the Parrot Cafe in North Seattle from 2003 to 2006. We have resurrected the Parrot Cafe here on the Internet! Our goal is to provide the finest organic coffee and tea available on the marketplace, as well as an eclectic selection of rare books, documents, and collectibles."

I apologize if you feel that our use of the term parrot cafe (in lowercase) has disparaged or disrespected The Parrot Cafe — it wasn't our intention and unfortunately, it's a term used by everyone in the emerging animal cafe industry so it's still the best term for what we're doing even though it is vastly different from The Parrot Cafe.

Thank you for everything you have done for your local parrot community and I would love to connect with you outside of this comment thread and chat about selling some of your coffee, by the way :)

Have a great day,

Erik Wolf
