People who graduate with a degree in ethnomusicology can pursue any number of careers: They can, for instance, teach ethnomusicology. Or drive for Uber. Or spend the next two decades playing huge festivals, releasing more than a dozen albums, writing screenplays, hosting a series of live webcasts that’s been described as “Wayne’s World meets The Judy Garland Show,” and co-writing a musical with the Pulitzer-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes that The Wall Street Journal hailed as the best musical of 2018.

That was the path chosen by Erin McKeown, a Massachusetts singer-songwriter whose work has been compared to that of the similarly versatile Anais Mitchell, with whom she has occasionally collaborated, as well as Norah Jones and Florence + The Machine. With such an expansive repertoire, McKeown’s setlists tend to change from show to show, but you can typically count on a few favorites like “Pretty Little Cemetery,” “The Queer Gospel” and “(Put the Fun Back in the) Funeral.” And given the intimate setting, she won’t have any trouble hearing requests.
