Drop Dead, Gorgeous does Denver good

Do the math: The Denver metal/hardcore crew Drop Dead, Gorgeous has six members, three -- count 'em, three -- of whom are named Dan or Danny. Three members still are in high school. And it took just six months as a band for them to earn a deal from punk-metal label Rise Records. They hooked up with the label via their page on myspace.com (myspace.com/dropdeadgorgeous).

"We're pretty much doing whatever it takes to get heard," says guitarist/vocalist Kyle Browning.

Rise re-released their EP, Be Mine, Valentine this month. Valentine runs the typical hardcore gamut of killer riffs and tons of guttural screaming, with amazingly delicate snatches of piano-driven melody tucked away.

"Bullets Are Scene," for one, halts the metal frenzy, then launches into a haunting interlude, with frontman Danny Stills speaking hazy words in the background. It could be a love letter, it could be a prayer; whatever it is, it creates a song fascinating enough to hear over and over in an effort to understand it.

Unlike other high school juniors, generally given to laying around the house during spring break, Browning is looking forward to the upcoming season for a very different reason: the release of the band's first full-length album, In Vogue.

The group traveled to Portland, Ore., to record with producer Kris Crummett (Anatomy of a Ghost, Still Life Projector). Band members missed classes to make the trip -- not a common concern for a rock band. And it won't be one of theirs for long. This year, one of the high-schoolers is scheduled to graduate; the other two are talking about getting GEDs or diplomas via online courses next year.

"Our parents are a little worried," admits Browning, "but we know finishing school comes first."
