Fort Carson will see its 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) converted to a 16th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), and perhaps shipped elsewhere, under a plan outlined in a March 30 environmental study to determine the change's impact. Fox21 News first reported the plan.

One option would keep the unit at Carson, meaning no change in personnel. Or the post could lose 4,200 soldiers if the unit is moved to one of four locations: Fort Bliss or Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Riley in Kansas or Fort Stewart in Georgia. If the unit stays at Carson, the realignment would mean one Stryker BCT and two ABCTs stationed there, the study says, for which existing facilities are largely available, although some maintenance and administration buildings would need to be built. Public comments on the plan will be accepted until April 29.
