Gathering Grounds is the perfect place to pound biscuits and gravy while basking in sunlight

Located in the former space of Salida's Café Dawn (which moved to 122 E. First St.), Gathering Grounds Coffeehouse & Eatery picks up the mantle as a place to be drenched in sunlight as you down a plate of rich biscuits and gravy ($7.50/large) with a foamy latte ($3.80/16-ounce). The latter’s made from Mountain Phoenix Coffee Roasters’ beans from nearby Poncha Springs; it’s fine if you dig dark-roast flavors in your finish. What’s nice about the biscuits is the choice of regular buttermilk and gluten-free (almond flour) versions, plus a vegan gravy option, made with a sexy mushroom-leek cashew cream. We request a mixed portion to try the options, enjoying the velvety vegan gravy as much as the regular mushroom-onion version. Predictably, the GF biscuit’s a bit denser and drier than its fluffy counterpart, but still, not at all lackluster. What’s more: The whole affair’s filling as hell, ample fuel for tackling an S-Mountain summit across the river.
