I once had the pleasure of meeting George Clinton, the ringleader of pioneering funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic, when I was working as a short-order cook at an L.A. burger joint. The legendary musician was immediately recognizable, not least because of his rainbow dreadlocks. Naturally, I exclaimed “You’re George Clinton!” a typical fanboy response that most celebrities get sick of hearing. “Not today I’m not,” he responded with a sly grin, before going on to order his cheeseburger. (And no, despite his mid-’80s hit, “Do Fries Go With That Shake,” he didn’t ask for either.) Today, at age 77, Clinton and his current Parliament Funkadelic lineup will be in Boulder to play the first date on what he says will be his final tour. Expect to hear iconic singles like “Flashlight,” “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)” and, of course “Atomic Dog.” Expect these live versions to extend up to and beyond the 10-minute mark. And expect to be blown away by a stage full of top-flight musicians who will provide enough transcendent moments to make you thank the gods of funk that you were smart enough to show up.
