Re: “The resurrection of Pastor Ted

Thanks for the interview full of puff ball questions – Larry King couldn’t have pulled off a less probing and honest interview. Erik Erikson, the great psychoanalyst and educator whose studies perhaps contributed most to the understanding of the young, has said, “Someday, maybe, there will exist a well-informed, well-considered, and yet fervent public conviction that the most deadly of all possible sins is the mutilation of a child's spirit”. Ted Haggard and his supporters such as those who have commented on this article up to this point are guilty of that sin -- the mutilation of the spirits of uncounted gay children and adolescents. A teenager commits suicide every ninety minutes in this country and suicide ranks as the third highest killer of adolescents. There are a multitude of factors that can contribute to this shocking propensity toward suicide especially among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transsexual youth who are always overlooked. Gay teens are more susceptible to rejection by friends and family, violence, and limitations of helping resources, all of which affect gay teen suicide rates. Further, gay youths are at a greater risk for depression and suicide because of cultural attitudes toward homosexuality which finds its expression in the religion of Ted Haggard and his followers, past and present. Why didn’t the writer press him on these issues? What he has done to and said about gay people in the past should never be forgiven. That others who have commented have refused to hold him accountable only shows how hypocritical and hate-mongering religious believers are
