Get a Bodyguard at Bada Japanese Restaurant

Bada’s now 2 years old, still hacking it in a tough location with low main-road visibility. But it remains a strong sushi option, still worthy of the high praise I initially gave it. Case in point: my on-special Bodyguard Roll (cue Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”), a mammoth creation for a fair $14.95.

The colorful combo includes tempura shrimp, crab mix, cream cheese, jalapeño, spicy tuna, krab, spicy mayo, wasabi mayo and Sriracha. Spice comes full-on from the get-go, a layered smoldering between all the chile and hot sauces. The tempura adds a necessary crunch factor while the cream cheese serves to balance the heat by a touch, adding creaminess to the thick sauces. Stringed krab across the top manages to entangle diced fresh jalapeño bits, which have the last word.

The staff’s kind to kick me a bowl of miso soup and side salad even though I’ve only ordered this single roll. And later, after they’ve seen me snap pictures, the chef sends out a special Ninja Turtle dessert. (Critics hate this, by the way, when comped food arrives, since we pay our own way to remain unbiased, but we don’t want to be rude and send it back.) I say thank you and learn of the odd combo of krab and banana, panko-breaded and fried and doused in a nondescript but sweet “special sauce.” I can’t say I’m upset, because it was good!
