Re: “Misfire

A very good article that illustrates the need for a free and independent news organization that doesn't just parrot back what they are told by politicians or cut and pastes press releases. Thanks for not using the word 'investigation' in the article. It denotes criminal activity may have taken place and it is my experience when that word is used people start calling lawyers, filling up the proverbial sand bags and start building walls.

The call for an open independent review is completely appropriate in this case and should have started immediately, even before the fire was contained. The learning opportunities alone justify the need for the review and the results should be shared with any and all interested parties, not to lay blame, but to allow all other departments that will face this type of incident might learn from the right and wrong decisions made during this fire. Were mistakes made, of course they were, mistakes are made on every fire. The biggest mistake of all is not to learn from those mistakes and make the necessary changes in your organization so it doesn't happen again. Now if COS has another fire like this next year with the same people in charge, with the same results? THAT is incompetence and those people should be run out of town.

The fact that an outside review is not being encouraged by the city leaders is scary, just as scary as the cities refusal to join in unified command with the Incident Command Team and making statements like "You're not going to run the fire once it comes into the city." Those actions and statements smack of decision-making based on ego and ego has no place on the fire line, because the fire doesn't recognize ego or city limits.
