Re: “Fort Carson could lose 4,200 soldiers with personnel change

Fort Carson assumes that the carbon footprint of an infantry brigade and an armored brigade are roughly similar. That is absurd on its face. It is like comparing a carbon footprint to a carbon rut.
Looking at categories like terrain destruction, soil displacement and erosion. fuel consumption, air pollution, noise pollution etc produces a picture of stark contrasts.
Extreme local fire realities at both PCMS and Fort Carson add a significant category not explored in the analysis. Destructive fires this year at Fort Carson have burned thousands of acres and in one case burned homes off Post. In recent years a major fire at PCMS also caused damage to surrounding property. Training with armored equipment as compared to training with infantry equipment is like comparing night and day as far as training caused fires are concerned.
The economic impact argument is not as simple as adding up troop numbers. Subsidizing Fort Carson by way of tax breaks and cozy utilities discounts arguably costs local treasuries more than it reimburses them. A thorough analyses would conclude that the city is better off if Fort Carson shrinks rather than grows.
In summary, if this new brigade is to be placed at Fort Carson there needs to be a full blown Environmental Impact Statement.

Re: “Routon honored by Mayor John Suthers with Spirit of the Springs Award

I'm surprised Ralph would let himself be used by a politician. Way to cosy.

Re: “Mike Pence plans spin through military bases in El Paso County

Schriever is as "spooky" as any place on earth. Tax payer dollars gobbled up by civilians and military working in the shadows .No transparency and no accountability. So much of this goes on that it is no wonder there is never an audit of all the money the Pentagon cycles through every year. Disgusting.

Re: “Reader: The Academy Chapel is a beloved national monument, you crazies

When one pokes the folks who think this is a Christian nation with a stick they just go ahead and fess up. Amusing.

Re: “Army stages one of its biggest drills yet at Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site

What a contrast of stories on Raider Focus II between the Gazette and the Indy. The Gazette releases a long bunch of happy talk and the Indy digs down into the weeds and tells us the real story.

Re: “Tax resisters see movement grow in Donald Trump's America

Tomorrow Friday April 14 we will hold signs and pass out leaflets concerning the amount of tax payer money going to the military (about 50%). We'll be at the downtown Post Office from 12 -1. See you there. Spread the word. For more than 40 years there has bee a similar gathering in Colorado Springs.

Re: “Helicopter accident report raises questions about 2015 Black Hawk crash

Good reporting. I've studied that truncated report and would add that the fact that it took 18 months to release anything is part of the deception. Slow walking the release of information is a strategy all by itself. Dozens of pages totally blank. Blacked out sections throughout. They operate on tax payer money and are obligated to more transparency. Reading closely one realizes there could have been an inferno if the fuel tanks hand been punctured. Currently Fort Carson is in the process of seeking more helicopter landing zones on both United States Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands in our nearby mountains. It's only a matter of time before their antics set off a really big forest fire. Meanwhile their daily intrusions into that airspace continue to impact the serenity of our mountain landscapes.
