Grand Marnier chocolate chip ice cream at Josh & John’s

With school back in session, it’s all too easy to consider summer gone. But that’s far from reality, especially when Josh & John’s continues to turn out great limited-time flavors.

We find ourselves entranced by the prospect of Grand Marnier chocolate chip ice cream. My dining mate pairs a scoop with a scoop of raspberry cheesecake ice cream, and we’re both sold. The former tastes true to spirit, with present but not overwhelming orange peel and the stone fruit notes imparted by higher alcohols. Chocolate chunks finish each bite with a good counterpoint. As for the raspberry cheesecake, we delight in pieces of fruit mixed with a creamy, rich ice cream base. It’s nicely tart and not overly sweet, though still saccharine enough for the kids.

And though we get the mango sorbet because it’s lactose-free, it’s splendid in all ways, true to fruit with that whisper of piney-ness that just-ripe mangos often have. We try it in a house-made waffle bowl, which bears nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, a lovely thing, though we’d sooner match it with ice cream for a stronger pairing.
