20-year resident of Colorado Springs, now living in small-town America and visiting the Springs on occasion. Loved life in CS, except for the sprawl.

Re: “Saying goodbye to the eye in the sky

I remember when this noisy helicopter unit began. The endless circling overhead at night was not a welcome intrusion on our quiet Knob Hill neighborhood. I'm sure that it helped catch criminals, but it also made Colorado Springs reminiscent of South Central in the movie "Boyz in the Hood". You had to question whether or not it was worthwhile. With the elimination of the helicopter unit, I guess we will see if it was as vital as some claimed.

I escaped to a small town where no helicopter is present or necessary, only to attend a city council meeting where a company was trying to sell a similar enforcement helicopter to the local government. Our wise chief of police opined that it was not needed, and we now owe a large part of the peace and tranquility of our city to him.

Some people believe that any law enforcement tool is a good thing. I think that you have to weigh the benefits against the costs before implementing such measures. It is unfortunate that it took a budget crisis to return peace to the skies of Colorado Springs.
