By its very definition, feminism is revolutionary and radical. It's about community, action and awareness. But it's also about music, art, dancing, sex and simply having fun. Those ideas intersect at an annual gathering called Ladyfest Out West.

The three-day festival, now in its second year in Denver, is designed to highlight the artistic and political achievements made by women and trans folk by featuring music, art, workshops and film. It's a little bit D.I.Y. and a little bit rock 'n roll, and all genders are welcome.

Five years ago, Riot Grrrl musicians and activists organized Ladyfest as a side project. Today, it's spread across the nation, with regional Ladyfests popping up all over, even as far as Glasgow and London.

As one of the planners for the first festival in Olympia, Wash., musician, writer and teacher Sarah Dougher is familiar with the Ladyfest rigmarole. A featured performer at Denver's festival, Dougher's excited to see what the local gals have come up with.

"I really love to go see the different versions of it," she says. "We created something that was a rough template, and we did it in a really transparent way so that people could create festivals that relate to their own communities.

"It expands itself to new and different forms of art, and connects art and politics in a new way. I love it. It's really empowering for a lot of women."

This year's events include a feminist visual art opening and fashion show and workshops in silk screening, starting your own movement, making your own vibrators, bike maintenance, politics and body and cultural issues.

Performers include Aussie band Origami, Partyline (with Allison Wolfe from Bratmobile), chamber/indie darling Bonfire Madigan and hip-hop hottie Breathless. San Francisco Poetry Slam champion Thea Hillman also will perform.
