Hobby Lobby just isn't the best company to work for. There are a lot of bait and switch techniques used.
In Feb 2011 I had an interview with the company. I was excited because I am a christian and wanted to work for a store that cared more about people than money (Hobby Lobby is in it for the dough, folks).
I was hired for $9.00 an hour which I was told would be "probationary pay" that would change after my 90 day probationary period was up. Later on we all learned that that period didn't even start until opening day!!!!

The first thing I and about 50 people had to do was build the inside of the store from the tiles up. We built shelves, displays, painted, drilled, hammered- you name it we did it.

We worked from 7am to 7pm, 14 days straight. Some of us (including Me) did not get a day off until the 16th day. We were all told within that first week that we were basically "auditioning" for a spot at a full time job. We opened on Feb 14th, 2011.
Corporate over estimated our opening week sales, which were thought to be around 150,000 a week. They turned out to be 50,000 a week (This is in Ohio).
As a result of the small amount of profit the store brings in every week, most of those people that worked their tails off are now unemployed. For those who were hired, they were only hired part time, $9.00 an hour, 20 hours a week. At this time I am only working 15 hours a week !!! This is the VERY DEFINITION of "under employed" to anyone who is trying their best to work for a living. And our hardworking boss was forced to "resign" due to pressure from corporate to get the store under or within budget by whatever means necessary- firing people, working with less manpower and putting excess strain on full time employees who are already taking carer of one dept and now taking care of two depts due to "lay-offs".

And did I mention there are no bar code scanners because David Green does not believe in the bar code system? And employees have to do a HAND COUNT inventory every week in order to know what to order for their department?

The full time people are the only ones who get raises, paid time off, paid vacations, medical insurance, eye care insurance, (no dental, which is why the older full time employees teeth look like hell), paid holidays, and get $11.00 or more upon hiring. And if a new hire comes in who has a parent that works for the company they do get special treatment, such as being promoted to head of a department, even if they have had no prior retail experience. But their are VERY FEW FULL TIME EMPLOYEES working at Hobby Lobby, and the ones that are were transferred in from another store!!!!!

This company sucks in so many ways, and still they continue to build more stores. They are building another store in Grove City, Ohio in two weeks. But what does David Green care? I'm sure he has no problem paying his house payment every month.

As for gay people being treated badly in Hobby Lobby stores, that doesn't surprise me, but I believe that may have more to do with the surrounding community than the store itself. There are quite a few openly male gay customers and some females in the store that I work at, and I haven't seen them treated badly or poorly. I am typically the first person customers see when they walk in and the last to speak to them when they leave, and I treat people as well as I can because I know for a fact a little respect and kindness goes a long way.
