As someone who likes the ‘90s — but doesn’t necessarily love them — this tour is a mixed bag. The Dallas-born rapper Vanilla Ice, in particular, could be called an acquired-taste-in-reverse, having steadily faded from the public consciousness since his 1990 To the Extreme album sold more than 7 million albums on the strength of its inescapable “Ice Ice Baby” single. Five subsequent albums failed to chart, but an entire MTV generation will remain haunted by his video’s overly demonstrative Hammer-style choreography and that relentless bassline he purloined from Queen’s “Under Pressure.” Coolio, Rob Base and Young MC, meanwhile, enjoyed similarly short-lived moments in the spotlight, owing to their respective hits “Gangsta’s Paradise,” “It Takes Two” and “Bust a Move.” (Although it must be noted here that “coolio” often appears in Slack responses from at least two Indy staffers, and no one’s really sure why that is.) The I Love the ‘90s nostalgia tour’s saving grace, for many, will be Vanilla Ice’s co-headliners Cheryl James and Sandra Denton, better known as Salt-N-Pepa. From a commercial perspective, their five studio albums have all reached Billboard’s Top 40, racking up 7 million or so in sales of their own. But more importantly, from a performance perspective, singles like “Push It,” “Expression” and “Whatta Man” have actually stood the test of time. And fans of female turntablists will be glad to know that DJ Spinderella is joining the duo on this tour. So there you have it. Just remember to bring along your Inner ‘90s Child, and you’ll be fine.
