One more reason: dogs have scent glands in their feet that leave their odor everywhere they go, that deer and elk can smell long after the dog is gone. These prey animals will then change their route or totally avoid the area. If it's where they usually live and breed and raise their young, it can disrupt their whole life cycle. This is why some parks don't allow dogs at all on the trails, even on leash (Mueller).
