Re: “Rainbow disconnection

Admist the conservative and at times oppressive backdrop of Focus on the Family, New Life Church and two military bases touting "Don't ask, Don't tell", the exixtence of THe Pride Center is not only critical, it is nothing short of a miracle. On a very small budget and with only two full-time salaried employees the Pride Center provides over a dozen successful programs which serve the GLBT community. From the most well-know event, Pridefest, to the Lunchbreak , produced twice weekly to 1,200 members, to their help-line, drop-in center and internett cafe' to their social groups the Pride Center provides services to hundreds of community members in the Clorado Springs area. Especially important are the services they continue to provide at a time when other agencies are experienceing severe cutbacks, for example their HIV Prevention Project is the only program in the area provideing outreach to gay men. THe advocacy and political action work is often unseen but is an integral part of the Pride Center aimed at protecting exisiting rights and moving ever forward to a place where GLBT members enjoy equal rights. They are also a support to GLBT busness owners through their business ntewroking program and through affordable advertising venues such as The Rainbow Pages. It is my nderstanding that the difficulties in publishing the directory is due to it's success, not it's failure. Simply put, they sold many more ads than they had anticipated and as such the cost of printing increased which reuired then to search for more affordable printing options. In addiotn to all of the services mentioned, Ryan Acker filled on other role of advertising graphics manager, often designing the ads submitted by businesses to the Rainbow Pages. Whatever Mr. Trevio's issue is with the Pride Center one thing is clear he is no longer employed there. Meanwhile it sounds as if we can excpect a new local resource for the GLBT community. Sincerely, G. Fisher
