IQ: Bullet the blue sky

With Pakistan increasingly unstable, we may soon be faced with another potential theater of war. Clearly, the moral and personal issues soldiers have faced for centuries won't be going away any time soon.

How did the war in Iraq affect your life personally? I was kind of confused, because first it was Afghanistan and then all the sudden it was Iraq. But I figured if that's where we need to go, that's where we need to go.

Under what circumstances — if any — is torture justified? I believe in the sanctity of life and the sovereignty of man. Under no circumstances should someone be tortured, because life is more valuable than that.

How have the war and the torture issue affected your view of the military? Some argue that they were ordered to do that, but at the same time that doesn't mean they should.

How would you feel about us getting involved in Pakistan? If they ask for our help, and we're honestly able to help, I don't have a problem with it.

How did the war in Iraq affect your life personally? [My husband and I] were soldiers. When we decided to have a family, we got out. We have a little girl, and I put us first, before the Army.

What would you like to see Obama do in Iraq? I'd like him to get all of us out. We don't belong there; we shouldn't be there.

Under what circumstances is torture justified, if any? I got out so I wouldn't have to make those choices.

Do you think the torture allegations affected the reputation of the entire military or just the individuals? Soldiers just do what they're told. I don't think it's fair to hold the individuals responsible.

How did the war in Iraq affect your life personally? I would say that it angered me more than anything else. It was very futile.

What do you hope Obama can do? I'd like to see at least some kind of growth in the economy. It seems like it's been at a standstill for the last eight years. Maybe he would be able to get my interest in politics back.

Under what circumstances can it be justified to torture? I don't think it's OK at all ... you would arrest a [civilian] for doing the exact same thing to another person.
