Ivywild School kitchen changes revitalize Old School Bakery’s offerings

This marks the first time we’ve visited since Old School Bakery turned reseller, hosting breads by Delicias Bakery and pastries from Pueblo’s Hopscotch Bakery; the kitchen’s been expanded into the former baking area. Hopscotch’s ham and cheese snails ($2.10 each, on special) are spirals of buttery puff pastry with ham and Swiss cheese, baked in a muffin tin, topped with sesame and poppy seeds. We get them to dip in charred tomato soup ($5/bowl), but they don’t last that long — and each bite’s a pleasure. That soup’s no slouch either, roasty with a balanced acidity, topped with tender garlic croutons. Points also for pillow-soft focaccia. We net one of the last plates of Tuesday-special tacos ($9), plenty spicy with a good salsa verde and pickled jalapeños. The Laughing Lab-braised chicken thigh in each of three tortillas is juicy and seasoned mildly, letting the toppings play lead. With fast service, it’s night and day from past visits. Bravo.
