JAKs Brewing’s flagship location offers a respite from the hoppin’, happenin’ sports bar vibe of Purple Toad next door. For its spacious seating area and the number of customers, it’s surprisingly quiet. But after a mixed experience at the satellite taphouse on Dublin, we’re curious as to what’s happening at home base.

So we order a pint of something friendly, the Something Klever ale, and something more ambitious, Caffeine Withdrawal coffee stout. The former, we’re told, lands somewhere between a red ale and a brown ale. That tracks — we’d describe it as a lighter brown ale, and we enjoy its pleasant roast notes and faint fruity hints that suggest cherry. It finishes clean, a respectable ale we’d knock back again.

The latter, served on nitro, gets 15 gallons of Monsooned Malabar cold brew coffee from Black Forest’s superlative R&R Coffee Café per batch, which gives it a hell of a punch, both in terms of caffeine and flavor. On its own, the body’s a little thin, but it’s plenty creamy. Our bartender offers a “coffee and cream,” which adds house-made cream soda. We dig it, with a little vanilla and sweetness rounding out the flavor.
