For many, Jim Messina is best known as the latter half of ‘70s folk-pop duo Loggins & Messina, who climbed the charts on the strength of signature songs like “Angry Eyes,” “Danny’s Song,” “House at Pooh Corner” and the unavoidable “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” which was later covered by ‘80s hair band Poison. But unlike then-partner Kenny Loggins, Messina already had a proven track record when the two began performing together. He was a member of Buffalo Springfield — the band that launched the careers of Neil Young and Stephen Stills — and co-founded Poco with fellow Springfield survivor Richie Furay. Even so, it was Loggins who would go on to find multi-platinum success with solo mega-hits like “Footloose” and “Heartlight,” while Messina soldiered on in relative obscurity with a string of solo albums that combined folk, rock and Latin music. Messina and his current band’s setlist includes as many as a dozen Loggins & Messina songs, renditions of Americana classics like Poco’s “You Better Think Twice” and Buffalo Springfield’s “Kind Woman,” plus a small sampling of his solo work. And while that may be a stark contrast to classic-rock contemporaries like Todd Rundgren, whose Pikes Peak Center performance relegated his popular songs to a single half-hearted medley, there’s still something to be said for Messina’s willingness to give his fans a comfortingly familiar break from the trials of everyday life.
