Jives Coffee Lounge switches roasters, but feels the same

The steampunk-themed second Jives location outside Pikes Peak Harley-Davidson shuttered last year, but the original Jives appears in good health. Atmosphere-wise, nothing major in the café catches our eye as a change, as we note diverse customers, from a police officer to the requisite guy-on-a-laptop, a chatty couple and a broody-looking solo dude (80-percent chance he’s a musician, I feel). We’re told Jives’ java did change, away from its own house-roasted beans over to Spanish Peaks Coffee — particularly an Ethiopian-Costa Rican “Jives Blend.” My pal orders a 20-ounce pourover ($4.10) with the Costa Rican bean, solo, as there’s a retail area around the service counter where all origin options are displayed. He’s content, as I mostly am with a 12-ounce cappuccino ($2.90) that proportionally drinks more like a latte, heavy on sudsy macrofoam, but smooth enough in a basic espresso finish even if it’s buried in too much milk to glean distinguishing flavor descriptors.
