The younger a musical prodigy is, the more likely that slightly awkward adolescent performances will find their way onto YouTube. That happened a couple years ago to The Lemon Twigs, the critically adored glam-pop brother act whose pre-adolescent attempts at grunge and rap performances, under an earlier band name, have since gone viral. Now, history appears to be repeating itself with the fast-rising upstate New York sibling act Jocelyn & Chris Arndt, thanks to family footage of Jocelyn onstage at her 2013 high-school graduation, seated at the keyboard in cap and gown, accompanying herself on piano as she sings an original song about high school memories for her assembled classmates. The video now has more than 10,000 YouTube views. Less than five years later, the Arndts have continued to mature, both musically and lyrically, with two excellent albums, a pair of EPs, and a couple of live recordings to prove it. Their most recent release, Go, features contributions from prominent artists like Gov’t Mule’s Danny Louis, and critics have begun racking their brains to describe their full-band live performances: “Imagine Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette paying homage to Janis Joplin and Grace Slick,” writes one. “Think Bonnie Raitt channeled through Grace Potter with a visit from PJ Harvey,” suggests another, while a third says their sound mixes “Janis Joplin and Queen into a surprisingly modern sonic experience.” All of that may indeed take some imagining. But if those name-checks resonate for you, here’s your chance to find out for yourself.
