Re: “A plan to downsize roads in the Old North End leads to a lawsuit

Always fun to read comments, those against it the most dont understand the value narrowing streets brings.

First off, lower traffic speeds result in a safer neighborhood for all the Old North End. Especially those with children and pets. Narrowing the road doesnt increase traffic either and actually makes for a quieter neighborhood too.

Next, the idea that General Palmers vision for road width is applicable is a bit of a laugh. Come on Doc, there were no cars back in Palmers day. Nor was he a legit city planner, he was in the military. His vision was far from perfect and while hes worthy of being credited with founding of the town its not like hes Frank Lloyd Wright or a comparable person in city planning. Hes a guy who was looking to make a few dollars, not a legendary planner of his time. Either way, knowing how he felt about nature seeing what he left us for parks, I think its save to say Palmer would be rolling over in his grave if he could see how fast (and loud) people drive on Nevada. Also worth noting he was fond of bicycles so safe to say hed be downtown Julie Brown with the proposed bike lanes.

One thing the city should have learned from the Research issue is this: emotion based, fact-less, mob banter thats the result of people not opening their mail and attending meetings in their neighborhood then bitch when things happen they dont like shouldnt be something we as a city should cave into. Ever. Sure fire way to screw things up, and was a bad precedent to set for allowable adult behavior in this day and age.

Re: “FoodMaven could do more harm than good in the fight against food waste

Worth noting Food Maven does not/will not/cannot sell direct to the public. They supply restaurants, who are facing increases in food costs without ability to raise prices do to market thresholds, schools, institutional food service, and other places that food costs at a large scale is an issue.

They also give a TON (or should I say tons?) of food to local food kitchens, food banks, and other nonprofits who feed those who are going hungry on a daily basis. In Southern Colorado I heard a number around 25,000 people each week don't get to eat 3 meals a day or even every day.

Food Maven is taking food from places like Safeway, King Sooper's, etc... who'd normally let the food go to waste and in some cases literally throw away perfectly good food. They are then selling it to our local restaurants at a killer price that can help them get the margins they need to stay in business.

I don't see this hurting Mike's business. I will always go to a local burger joint for my local burger, and if a model like Food Maven allows a place like say McCabe's get it's buns & fries cheaper for my burger so they can make a profit and still afford to offer a premium product like Callicrate beef well so be it.

Re: “"Chard Skorman" for Council?

Richard's a hell of a class act. Not sure there is anyone with a better understanding of our city government than Richard Skorman in town. And he's a got a good sense of humor.

Re: “Cyclists say their lives are at risk from road-raging motorists

As cyclists though we also need to set positive examples as well. Last night I saw a group of 30-40 cyclists deliberately blocking the width of the single south bound lane in downtown while a dozen cars were backed up behind them. This does one thing: Pisses off car owners and that then negatively affects the rest of us who can show a little respect on the road.

Another common infraction is blowing through stop signs & red lights. This is the #1 complaint I've heard non cyclists share with me as to why they dislike cyclists.

In both cases, cyclists being dicks sadly does not reflect only on them.....but you then risk putting the rest of us responsible cyclists in danger of such retaliation tactics as mentioned above.

But show car owners some respect? You get respect. Also, work on getting non biking friends even on the simplest of bikes to grow our numbers of people on bikes.

Re: “The jet set

You want to see what's the "forefront" of a modern city? It's easy, go to Denver just an hour away. Stop ignoring all the amazing things Denver is doing, and go check it out in person. It's the #1 fastest growing city in America right now. The place for YP's to be. Its' a no brainer.

Re: “Taking off the shackles

Great article John. And you're right, we need to build up our cycling infrastructure. T's the signs of a modern city in the 21st century. It's a huge reason to move to the cities you mentioned.

Of course, if we want more call centers and low paying jobs by all means let's say no to it.
