Re: “Sheriff race shaping up in El Paso County

The Office of Sheriff is a multi-disciplinary one; unique to our law enforcement community. Typically, as in El Paso County, they are responsible for a jail/detention center in which both innocent men and women awaiting disposition, along with convicted criminals are housed. It involves an understanding health, security, legal rights, nutrition, housing, transportation -- the management skills to necessary to house, secure and protect 1500+ are staggering. Tied to that is court security. Then there is a need to understand community policing. Rural law enforcement is vastly different from policing in a city or town. That lone sheriff on the eastern plains is at once a police officer, counseler, first medical/fire responder, game warden, animal control, chaplain -- such a diverse job requires management at the top that approaches the office holistically. But, its not over yet, don't forget that the Sheriff is also our emergency manager; responsible for the protection of life and property in the face of natural and man-made threats; the search and rescue of recreationists; and, the intregration of homeland security. And, finally, the Sheriff must be an authentic leader, not just within his department but with other politicians, boards, community groups and the electorate. Finding such a renaissance man and authentic leader, with a broad and diverse background is daunting -- except in this County. I have watched Jim Reid in a variety of roles -- he is an authentic leader with all the requisite skills and the humility to do the job. I may be a long-time, dedicated democrat, but I will cross that party line - Reid will be my choice for Sheriff and I would urge my fellow democrats to support him as well. Its time to elect the best for the job, regardless of party affiliation.
