Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival

When: June 20-21 2015

Although Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it would take another two-and-a-half years for the declaration of freedom to find its way to Texas, where some 250,000 slaves remained. It wasn't until June of 1865 that the last major Confederate command surrendered and the abolition of slavery was finally announced in Texas, giving birth to the national holiday known as Juneteenth. This Saturday and Sunday at the Hillside Community Center (925 S. Institute St., 385-7900), you can take part in the 150th anniversary of that historic milestone, as the African American Voice newspaper holds its Juneteenth Caribbean Heritage Festival. The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. both days, complete with live entertainment, food vendors and plenty to celebrate. You can also find a full list of commemorative events at juneteenth.us. — Bill Forman
