An article in the Nov. 27, 1948 edition of The Afro American reads, "It seems that in Texas, colored people did not receive the news of the Emancipation [Proclamation] when the rest of the country did. They did not get the news until [years] later — June 19, which is why they celebrate a day the rest of the country never hears about. June 19 is the only day colored people can go to the zoo in Fort Worth." So, do Juneteenth — a Texas emancipation holiday gone national — up in style and hit Colorado College's Armstrong Quad (14 E. Cache la Poudre St., from 11 to 5 today and enjoy entertainment, food and more from the local NAACP. — Bryce Crawford
