Now that Prince has passed on to that paisley park in the sky, Justin Timberlake can embrace his “Prince of Pop” nickname with no fear of legal reprisal. The only former NSYNC member who still matters (at least to the record industry), Timberlake is currently touring behind last year’s Man of the Woods release, which ended his five-year hiatus from the studio. The album features collaborations with Timbaland — who played a huge role in the success of Timberlake’s first No. 1 album FutureSex/LoveSounds — and also finds the Nashville native slipping some unexpected country influences into the mix. In a behind-the-scenes documentary, he refers to it as “modern Americana with 808s.” Those motifs are also reflected in The Man of the Woods Tour’s stage show, which includes a thicket of holographic grass that sprouts as needed, an onstage campfire to gather ’round, and Timberlake taking a break from his signature dance moves long enough to pick up an acoustic guitar for a number or two. But longtime fans needn’t worry; Timberlake and his 15-piece backing band have more than enough energy to drive home uptempo hits from “SexyBack” to “Filthy” and all points in between.
