Re: “Our view: El Paso County sheriff

code7- I agree that we need someone in office that is going to make it better. I have reviewed Shirk and Maketa's sites and been to the debates. I have read lots of stuff on this site that seems very one sided. It seems that the Sheriff that we have now may not be perfect. He has employees that work for him that people question. I would think they must be good employees however if they are still there.
As far as my feelings towards each candidate, it seems like Shirk is only about response times and guns on the streets. Well he doesn't ever talk about everything else the Sheriff is in charge of. What about the jail he is mandated to run? What about search and rescue, what about the fire fighters in unincorperated areas? He seems to be narrow minded. I listen to the Sheriff talk and it seems if there is a problem or issue that affects the county he will get on a board to have a say so in what happens. He is on state, federal, and national boards. That seems pretty amazing. All I hear Shirk talk about is how he has been a cop for 35 years and response times. But the Sheriff's Office response times havent changed in the last 5 years even when they had more cops on the streets. It seems that the Sheriff we have now even in times of budget cuts has provided more services for less. He has been very innovative in order to provide for the citizens. So I'm not understanding how Shirk would be a better option. For the last 5 years he has been running an agency with 14 or so cops and focuses more on helping church's security that playing cops let alone a role that helps his community. I think it takes a great leader to do the things he is doing. My vote will be for Maketa for everything I have seen.
