Re: “Smoking: Whose choice is it?

Ethan, I have to say you are a very good writer for being so young, and you state your facts well. I even agree with a lot of what you say, I too hate to see government telling us how to live our lives. I do not agree with laws like, seat belt laws & helmet laws, but I do believe the government needs to ban smoking in public places. If you choose not to wear a seat belt, it doesn't effect me. Yes it might effect me monetarily in higher insurance rates, but it does not effect me personally. I choose not to smoke because of the smell and the health risks, personally I can't stand the smell of cigarettes, and do not want to be around it. But if I had to sit next to you at work or in class everyday, and you were allowed to smoke, it would effect me. That is the bottom line here, people smoking in public effects me, unlike the people who choose not to wear a seat belt. You are not only effecting yourself, but the people around you. Yes the government should not tell us how to live our lives, just the same way that you should not force me to be around cigarette smoke. Now if someone can invent a cigarette were 100% of the poisons and smell goes into the smokers lungs and not into the air everybody breaths, then I would not see a problem with smoking in public.

All the statistics and health reports don't matter to me, maybe I'm selfish, all I care about is how it effects me. But on a more personal note, Ethan I know you, and it breaks my heart to hear you coughing so badly at such a young age or to see you struggle to do any kind of physical activity. Yes you have the right to smoke, but I guess even if someone invented a cigarette that didn't pollute the air around me, I'd still have a problem with smoking, because it still effects me, by taking away the people I care about around me.
