Contrary to public perception, Houston’s music scene extends well beyond the Texas twang and roadhouse blues with which it’s commonly associated. For fresh evidence, look no further than Khruangbin, a mostly instrumental trio who combine the endearingly retro sound of Southeast Asian funk with a beguiling admixture of ‘70s Krautrock, Jamaican dub, classic surf and all things Chic.

In the less than four years since the release of their debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You, bassist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald Johnson have progressed from a trio of little-known neophytes — who were limited to performing at small venues and recording in a barn — to critics’ darlings who are getting ready to play a string of European festivals and still recording in a barn. And while their upcoming Red Rocks performance will be an opening set for the Los Angeles-based jam band Vulfpeck, the prior evening finds Khruangbin headlining their own sold-out show at the Boulder Theater.

Of course, along with all this comes the inevitable backlash: A
Guardian critic recently dismissed their “self-indulgent poolside funk grooves” — like that’s a bad thing? — as “wonderful sex muzak for Mac DeMarco fans,” which is just mean.

But with a little help from curiosity-seekers who gravitate toward the global pop of Dengue Fever or the crate-digging exploits of DJ Shadow, Khruangbin are a flavor of the month that may turn out to have a very long shelf life.
