Re: “We're the second-worst-dressed city

I will concede that COS shouldn't top the list of best dressed cities in the nation -- cities in square states are always a season behind coastal metropolises (metropoli?); however, I take MAJOR exception to the idea that we should be at the bottom. Here are a few reasons why:

1) Style doesn't begin and end at high end clothing stores. Style is an expression of our ideas of ourselves:

We've got glorious vintage shops in Colorado Springs, used to startlingly good effect by the likes of Claire Swinford, Edie Adelstein and the darling former COS resident Silas M.

We have trail-glam mamas like new City Councilwoman Jill Gaebler, who on any given Saturday looks like she just finished a photo shoot for Title IX.

We have adorable little punk rockers with 10 inch green mohawks, interesting facial jewelry, and enviously dangerous-looking boots.

We have Vargas girls, hipsters, dread-locked hippies, body art fanatics, and yes, designer devotees (like my gorgeous sis).

We may not have an Hermes on every corner, but we're certainly not walking around in granny jeans, white tennies and bedazzled sweatshirts.

2) Aren't we, like, one of the fittest cities in the country? It's a hard, hard lesson to learn but it's absolutely true: EVERYTHING looks better when you have a smokin' hot bod. Sorry. ("Hey, Dallas, You know that Carolina Herrera cashmere bolero you just paid $800 for? It doesn't hide your muffin top.")

3) What really melts their methodology is that unlike the other cities listed, fashion-wise we're really sort of an ex-urb of Denver. It takes me 45 minutes to get from my front door to the shoe department at Nordstrom. Just sayin.

Anyway, my point is, there are a lot of beautiful, well-dressed, sartorially expressive people in town. We're one of the best cities to people watch that I've ever been. We have, what's that word? Variety.
