We have enduring love for affordable lunches, and when we’re able to get Lemongrass Bistro’s lemongrass bean curd for $7.75 pre-tax and tip, we’re pretty jazzed. Service stands apart, too. When we sit, we’re served not just water but a bowl of hot and sour soup and a little vessel of chile paste before we order. The soup, included with lunch, stands strong, with prominent fish sauce and a pleasant broth that’s not oversalted. We’re notified that the lemongrass bean curd isn’t vegetarian, due to its sauce having fish sauce. No problem for us — we dig the mild spicy warmth and the way the savory (and pretty unmissable) fish sauce plays with the herbaceous lemongrass. The fried tofu triangles come piled with veggies that aren’t overcooked, and while there’s enough sauce to flavor a mound of white rice, the plate isn’t swimming. We’re confused about the saucer of sweet and sour sauce on the side, but it’s surprisingly not artificial tasting and a lifesaver for the under-seasoned egg roll included in the meal.
