Re: “15th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance

This is the premiere event for dads to take their daughters. Geared towards the girls, they truly are treated like princesses. This will be my 8th event with my daughter and we wouldn't miss it!

Re: “The city didn't kill these. Now they're flourishing.

J Adrian - On behalf of all of us at the city community centers, including staff, volunteers, participants, community partners and funders, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your continuous advocacy of these facilities. While there is still so much to do and equally as much need to address, large strides have been made over these last five years to where what felt like a slippery slope now feels more like terra firma. E pluribus unum (out of many, one) is our country's motto and is a very appropriate descriptor for the efforts taking place at Deerfield Hills, Hillside and Meadows Park community centers. You and all CS Indy readers are welcomed and encouraged to visit us anytime. We certainly hope that you will. - Brian Kates, Facility Director, Meadows Park Community Center

Re: “Pikes tweak: Medical meth dispensaries to inject new life into Colorado Springs

J. April Phule, I don't know if you are a new writer on the Indy team, as I do not recall seeing your work prior to this week. Allow me to commend you on a job well done. Next to J. Adrian Stanley, you are the best we have at conveying what really goes on in local government. Continued success!

Re: “We're already poor, folks

Ralph, if I had a dime for every similar comment that you had bear witness to I just might have enough money to fund the centers. Thank you for taking the stance that we, as residents of this community, have a responsibility to do our part to try make this a healthy and vibrant community for all of its citizenry, regardless of how many digits in one's bank account or the 809__ code in which we live. One of your proud public servants, Brian Kates, Facility Director Meadows Park Community Center / Westside Community Center

Re: “What now?

Mister Mxyzptlk, you clearly reflected the viewpoint of the majority of voters, and I thank you for offering that perspective, even though it greatly contrasts with my own. The big question that I genuinely pose is, "How does a person like you and me work together towards righting the ship?". A common thread I assume is that we both like this community, want to see it healthy, and have great concerns about its current state. Next steps are...? Please advise.

Re: “What now?

To those of you say that City Council still doesn't get it, I have a contrasting point of view - that many of the citizens still don't get it. I say this based on my claim that 1) Small government doesn't = better government; 2) Using your vote to send a "vote of no confidence" to council doesn't fix the problem; 3) Not wanting to restore services because you don't directly use them e.g. City pools, community centers, bus lines, beyond being selfish, will lower property value, quality of life and economic development opportunities; 4) Trying to limit growth by not raising taxes won't prevent new people from moving to town (sorry, you must accept that the little town is now grown up and has grown up problems); 5) Privatizing services leads to a community of "haves" and "have nots" which will intensify problems in crime, diversity, culture and tolerance. November 3, 2009 will go down as a defining point in city history. What we do now will define us for years to come.

Re: “Attacking 2C's misconceptions

Garbage in...garbage out. I wish someone could actually point out to me where all of the waste is in the City's General Fund. Opponents of 2C often are quick to point out their mistrust of government, ignorance of elected officials on Council, the good 'old days with the good 'ole boys and one sheriff making sure that no dirt is taken out of boss' hole. But erode the emotion and get into the facts with these self-proclaimed fiscally responsible patriots and soon, usually after the sound of crickets begins, you are right back listening to someone who sounds like a cross between Don King, Yosemite Sam and The Donald. To these folks I say emphatically, "You're Fired!".
