Breakups and breakdowns, tragic losses and unresolved identity crises, these are the things Lily Allen brought to her latest album No Shame. As detailed in her forthcoming autobiography My Thoughts Exactly, the BRIT Award-winning pop provocateur has spent recent years coming to terms with PTSD-inducing incidents that range from the loss of her unborn son to a near-lethal encounter with a knife-wielding stalker. So it’s not surprising that the album took her nearly three years to record, or that there’s an undeniable ring of truth when she sings lyrics like “I’ve tried everything / Everything / Everything to feel something / But nothing.” Even by downbeat electropop standards, No Shame is admittedly a bleak affair. But with a setlist balanced out by No. 1 hits like “Smile” and cheerfully sarcastic pop tunes like “Fuck You,” Allen’s live show should be anything but.
