From the folks who brought you Flying Lotus before you’d even heard of him comes this year’s CC student-sponsored Llamapalooza. While the 2018 lineup may not prove quite so revelatory, it does score high grades for diversity: St. Louis rapper Smino, coming as he does from the land of Nelly, walks a fine line between contemporary hip-hop and vintage new jack swing; his 2017 breakthrough single “Anita” racked up close to 1.5 million YouTube views with its smooth beat and electronically enunciated raps. Oakland’s Jay Som cites Tame Impala and Yo La Tengo among her dream-pop inspirations, the band Crumb fulfills this year’s psych-pop quota, the local Motown and jazz-influenced Promiscuous Stepsister has the best band name, and the list goes on. While the outdoor festival was shut down by inclement weather three years ago, the gods of rain have since shown mercy and will hopefully continue to do so.
