Long story short

When I called Sarah Lotfi to schedule this week's cover shoot, her only question caught me a little off-guard.

"Is anyone else going to be in the photos?" she politely inquired.

Many of those building a career — especially in the entertainment business — would be quite content to enjoy some solo publicity. But Lotfi, a University of Colorado at Colorado Springs student and aspiring director, says she feels more at home behind the camera. Plus, she noted, "I'm the type of person who likes alliances."

In that, she has good company. Some of the most active players in the Springs' film scene have come together to organize a brand-new series called Colorado Short Circuit, designed to attract movie makers, movie lovers and eager students to loca screenings four times a year.

Lotfi's The Last Bogatyr, a war story complete with impressive pyrotechnics, has been selected as one of the highlights of the first Circuit installment, and you can read more about it in this week's cover package.

Lest those famous faces in Hollywood feel slighted, we've got more. Jonathan Kiefer shares his recommendations for big studio releases worth braving the weather to see, and Jeff Sneider offers DVD picks to get you through the holidays and beyond.
