Long Story Short

It's such a great idea that we're surprised no one ever thought of it before. Picture it: An editorial package in which writers and editors reflect on the year that's just passed.

It sounds crazy, I know, but stay with me on this. You could have a Top 10 list for film, another for music, maybe even one for food. The executive editor could look back on the year in local and state politics. You could even get the humor columnist to do something, so long as you don't agree to pay him by the word.

And it's that kind of envelope-pushing, bar-raising, outside-the-box thinking that inspired the Indy staff to rise up and say: If not us, who? If not now, when? OK, it was the ancient Babylonian philosopher Hillel the Elder who said that, but a lot of us were thinking it.

And from that point on — well, you know that Jason Derulo song, "What If?" The one where he croons: "If you are the one / Then us meeting here is fate / Future with a dog named Red / Buy a house with a fireplace."

I swear it was just like that, except, you know, without the Auto-Tune, the chinstrap beard, or the Justin Timberlake aspirations.

It's been said that those who forget 2010 are doomed to repeat it. So if I were you, I'd turn the page and start reading.
