There are some things from the ‘80s, like parachute pants and Flock of Seagulls haircuts, that are better left lost. But if you can get past all the toxic hairspray and goofy theatricality, there was also some decent pop music being made back in those days, even by the one-hit wonders who’ve been drifting like ghosts through the spent MTV ether. Until now, that is: The Lost ’80s Live Tour’s Denver lineup reads like a love-hate relationship in nine acts. You may, like me, have a fondness for the tribal pop of Bow Wow Wow frontwoman Annabella Lwin’s “I Want Candy,” the L.A. power pop of Dramarama’s “Anything Anything,” and the self-consciously creepy Bat Cave Club goth of Gene Loves Jezebel’s “Desire.” You may also, like me, be easily annoyed by Dale Bozzio’s dyspeptically chipper vocals on Missing Persons’ “Nobody Walks in LA,” or the absurdly self-referential tedium of Wang Chung chanting “everybody wang chung tonight,” as though that were a normal thing to do. You might even wonder why the guy in A Flock of Seagulls shaved his head, or how the relatively obscure When in Rome UK, Animotion and Naked Eyes managed to get on the bill. No matter; with the number of acts that’ll be paraded on and off stage, individual sets are guaranteed to be as fleeting as some of these bands’ careers.
